Tomb of the Shields and Chairs

Family hypogeum

The tomb gives its name to a monumental mound about 50 metres in diameter, which also contains the Tomb of the Painted Lions and the Clay Tomb. Dated between the 7th and early 6th century BC, it has a short dromos, side cells and a large vestibule facing three aligned chambers. Two thrones with circular backs and footstools flank the central doorway, while shields represented on the walls complete an interior that displayed authority, rank and ancestral memory.

Discovery and excavation

The mound's dimensions, chronology, plan and furnishings are documented in the UNESCO dossier.
