The Laghetto Necropolis is a burial sector, not a single tomb. It occupies the hill at the eastern edge of the plateau, between the Ripa del Manganello and Via degli Inferi, and is divided into Laghetto I and II. Villanovan shafts, inhumation trenches, chambers, mounds, roads and small squares document a very long period of use, from the earliest Iron Age phases to at least the 2nd century BC. Its modern name derives from a small pond once present in the area and later lost.
What to look for
The striking fact here is duration: burial forms separated by centuries coexist in one landscape, allowing us to trace Caere's social development.
Discovery and excavation
Its topography, Laghetto I–II sectors and prolonged use are documented by the archaeological Superintendency; its classification has been corrected to “necropolis area”.
