Dated to about 650–625 BC, this tomb lies within a mound more than twenty metres across. Its dromos leads to two side rooms and a main chamber. Five seats with footrests were carved in a row into the left-hand room; each originally held a terracotta figure, probably connected with ancestor worship. Surviving figures are now divided between the Capitoline Museums and the British Museum.
What to look for
The five seats describe a ritual rather than mere furniture: picture the figures seated there, symbolically taking part in ceremonies for the dead.
Discovery and excavation
Discovered in 1865 during excavations by the Castellani family.
